Xavier @ DePaul 1/19/22 (NCAAB)

Updated: Jan 20

The Big East is heating up as we are getting into the heart of the schedule for these teams. Number 20 ranked Xavier (13-3) heads to DePaul (10-6) to take on the Blue Demons at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

For the most part, this is a pretty even matchup in terms of field goal percentage and offensive rating in which Xavier is rated 108.8 and DePaul is rated 109.4. However, a large part in DePaul's offensive rating is due to their star guard Javon Freeman-Liberty who averages 21.1 points per game and shooting 44% from the field. This type of player is able to create his own shot as well as taking quality shots while not forcing many bad possessions. With news dropping recently that Freeman-Liberty is out due to a groin injury, this line has made a jump of two points. Couple that loss for the Blue Demons with Xavier's 35th ranked defense in the nation, and this team will have trouble finding open looks and spacing the floor. Xavier will plan to keep the game slow paced as DePaul struggles trying to get their offense running without one of their key players. Because of this, we will be isolating DePaul's offense against Xavier's suffocating defense for today's play which can also be helped out with DePaul's struggling 69.2% free throw shooting from the line.

Over these two teams past 5 head to head matchups, DePaul is only averaging 67.2 points per game. The trend is pointing towards the under and with the absence of 21.1 ppg production, DePaul may likely struggle early and find themselves in too deep of a hole in the first half.

Currently the odds sit at Xavier -9.5 (-110) O/U 149. This line has jumped from the opener of 7, but again that is of course due to an absence of DePaul's star guard. Like mentioned earlier in the article, we will take out any chance of a backdoor cover as we isolate the team total for tonight's game.
