About 2 weeks in to conference play and we are starting to get some really great matchups and really learn about how teams plays. It may not seem all that intriguing, but we get a great battle today in the Southern conference with VMI (9-8) taking on the Citadel (7-7) at McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina.
Such a fun offensive battle will we see here today as we get Citadel who rank 90th in pace, against one of the top free throw shooting schools in the nation, VMI, who shoot an incredible 80.6% from the stripe. There was a saying I heard once before that really stuck with me while playing basketball about free throw shots which was, "they're free, so take em". Well VMI must have heard the same thing because they do not struggle in that area.
With this game we will see the Citadel push the pace and VMI will not be afraid to run with them as noted in their past matchups. When these two teams match up, it is all about who can get down court quicker and score. Look at their past results - 75-74, 110-103, 88-79, 81-78, and we start to notice a trend here. Defense goes out the window. From the 3 point line, we see both teams put up and absurd amount of shots as both rank in the top 6 in the NATION in 3 point attempts. You will see a lot of Citadel running a quick offense and then on the other end of the court with double double machine Jake Stephens for the Keydets, nothing but rebounds then put back attempts at the rim.
Defense is not a strong suit for either school as they rank 203rd (VMI) and 217th (Citadel) in their defensive rating in the country. With what we have seen in the past when these two schools meet along with how efficient both are from the field and the 3 currently, we have a perfect set up for a run n' gun type of matchup this morning.
Currently the line sits at VMI -1.5 (-110) O/U 158.5 at the time of writing. This line has already moved up significantly and I expect it to continue to do so. I would play this game up to 159.5 since most of the value will be gone at that point.
Over 158.5 (-110) - 1 unit
